// RSS Confusion

06-Jan-10

I’ve recently been experimenting with our RSS feed. More specifically, I was transferring our RSS to Feedburner. However, I underestimated how confusing that could be and made a few missteps. Hopefully, everything is working fine now, though.

The bottom line is if you have subscribed in the past, you will need to click the Subscribe button to the left once again. I apologize for making you do it twice, but this way it should work much better.

Of course, if you haven’t subscribed to our blog as of yet, I would highly encourage you to click the button as well. It’s much easier subscribing to a blog using RSS. Basically, it sends all updates to you instead of you going out to look for them.

To sum up, please click the Subscribe via RSS button to the left.

If you’re unfamiliar with RSS and would like more information, here’s a great article from Lee Aase, the manager for Syndications and Social Media at Mayo Clinic.

// How a Break-in Changed a New Year

05-Jan-10

As the sun rose on the last day of 2009, I was enjoying a relaxing vacation away from home. Unfortunately, my home was being robbed at the time. I don’t say this to get sympathy, but only to make a point.

Nothing personal was damaged or stolen, and more importantly, our cats were fine. And to look on the bright side, this new year now provides us with a fresh start. Not just with new stuff, but a chance to start again and do things better (starting with a security system).

And that’s the point. When you’re afraid to change because you’re tied to doing things the way you’ve always done them, it can take something drastic to force you to change.

But what’s better? Waiting until a crisis when everything is in turmoil and you have to change, or looking ahead and acting ahead of time?

What didn’t you do last year because you were afraid to change or because you kept putting it off? Take the opportunity of a new year to do it now.

// What’s Your Resolution?

22-Dec-09

We’re coming up to another year. You’re probably finished and/or sick of reading all those “Best of the Year (or Decade)” columns, so it’s time to look ahead to 2010. And everyone’s favorite way to celebrate a new year is to make a New Year’s Resolution.

I asked around the agency for resolutions, and as can be expected, many replied with self-improvement including the always popular “eat healthier.” Amy, our PR Director, took a more agency-focused route and resolved to keep morale up around the office in 2010 and to try and do more internal PR activities/events/programs.

One even said he made a resolution in 1987 to not make any more New Year’s Resolutions, and he’s proud to say he’s kept it thus far.

For me personally, I’ve always made a generalized statement for my resolution. “I want to get better at…” or something like that. As you can expect, it usually falls off my radar before the end of January, never mind the year.

So last year, I committed to something specific. I resolved to try new things, specifically online, more specifically social media, most specifically Twitter. It wasn’t easy. I wasn’t sure what to do at first (and in many ways, I’m still learning).

But with the help of those around me as well as new people I met on Twitter, I feel I succeeded. (I do want to call out Sam Bradley as my first Twitter follower and mentor).

Of course, 2009 didn’t end with Twitter. It only led me to be more curious about all social media. I dived in and consumed as much information I could handle (and sometimes more). I couldn’t get enough.

This led to many successes. First, I learned a lot through experimenting. This helped me teach others and find ways to help our clients. Second, I met so many great people that I didn’t even know existed this time last year. And third (and a bit more personal) I was promoted to Social Media Director at The Price Group.

But what now? If 2009 was the year to learn and experiment, 2010 is the year to focus. My resolution is to take what I learned and apply it to help our agency and our clients. I hope to take this blog to the next level by posting more frequently and with more interesting content. Also, I want to engage more on Twitter.

Most importantly, I’m excited to have the opportunity to guide our clients. I’ve made many mistakes, and now I can take those lessons to make sure our clients don’t make the same ones.

Doing something new is good, but the real fun begins when I can apply that something new and bring other people with me. After all, that’s what social media is all about.

I will be taking a break for the holidays, but check in again starting the first week of the year to see a how it goes. But enough about me. What’s your New Year’s Resolution for 2010? Or even, what was your resolution in 2009, and did you succeed?
