Confession time. I watch a lot of TV. I mean, I have a set schedule of shows that I watch, and it takes up a lot of time. DVR helps, but I still have to be choosy on the new shows each season to add to this list.
Last week, the Lubbock Advertising Federation hosted a preview night of the new shows coming out this fall. For the past few years, I’ve been making my predictions on which shows will make it, and which won’t. I’ve been pretty successful, but this year I wanted to take it a step further.
I am writing out my predictions for the world to see. Below you can see what shows I think will be hits or misses. Keep in mind I’m basing this off of 30-60 seconds of previews for each show, so please be kind if I fall on my face.
HITS
In my mind, this is the easiest pick. The premier last spring was extremely well regarded, both by audiences and critics. Personally, I loved it, along with all my co-workers who watched it. I look for this to be the biggest hit this fall.
This is the next “Lost.” To be honest, I don’t know much about this show. I’m taking a risk on this one, but I think it will pay off. From what I’ve read, it seems like a captivating show, one that will hopefully learn from Lost’s mistakes and be more cohesive.
This show looks flat out funny. Chevy Chase and Joel McHale with writing from Dan Harmon (Sarah Silverman and the underrated Monster House) is a talented combination. The biggest thing going against this show is NBC. The low ratings on the network could hurt an otherwise brilliant show (think Arrested Development or 30 Rock).
MISSES
Accidentally on Purpose, Cougar Town, Brothers
I grouped all my misses together to prove one point. What happened to good sitcoms on TV? The previews for all three of these shows just made me cringe and long for the golden days of sitcoms (remember the ‘90s?). It’s truly sad that networks think they have to pander to the lowest common denominator to think a show is funny.
I should also mention I’m on the fence about Good Wife, Mercy and Modern Family. These could either be strong shows or complete flops. They look like they have promise, but I have just seen too little to decide yet.
Now it’s your turn. What new shows are you most/least looking forward to this fall? Leave your predictions in the comment section below.
